MY STORY
IMG_8065.jpg

I’m 57. I’ve said it, and I’m proud of it. In an industry (and world) obsessed with youth, I’ll admit that in my head I still feel 22, and I wouldn’t swap where I am in my life now for anything. I’ve been married for 23 years. I have a 21-year-old daughter who is, above all, a kind and generous soul, and I’ve come to believe that’s the best thing anyone can be. Kindness alongside boundaries runs through everything I’ve learned.

I started out wanting to be an actress. Looking back, I think that came partly from being a child of divorce and wanting to be noticed, and I’m not sure it was ever what I really wanted. But I’m grateful for all of it. My training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, the proper terrestrial television work and the voiceover contracts taught me so much, and not just about performing.

Then life stopped going to plan. I was made redundant from my last TV job and had no idea what came next. I lost my father, and the fallout from that sent me into a healing journey I never expected. That journey is where the podcast came from. It’s also why I’m so open now.

Every week I write a newsletter for the CraftyMonkies community, where I share what’s happened to me and what I’ve learned from it. People and community matter to me, and being open and vulnerable is the only way I know to connect. Building this business taught me something too: if you’re only chasing money, it won’t work. You need a purpose, and it has to come from your soul.

The biggest lesson of all is that the lessons keep coming, whether we want them or not, but we have to be open to them. That means dropping our ego. Our ego won’t let us feel vulnerable, and without vulnerability we can’t see the growth in front of us. Your soul is like a transistor radio. You have to hold it right up to your ear to hear it, because it’s a very quiet voice, but it’s always the right one. The loud voice, the one that shouts at you, is your ego, and it isn’t going to protect you, it's going to trap you. I’m still learning, and I’m still listening.

Now, what shall we make together? If you simply must see my TV work, press play. It's not really me any more, but it shows I can stand in-front of a camera!
